The Panaceum story starts in 1952, when two local Geraldton doctors started the Geraldton Medical Group. The practice operated from the Town Towers building before moving into the Royce Wing in the Community Health Centre near the Regional Hospital on Shenton Street in 1977.
With the construction of the new public hospital in 2004 and the establishment of resident doctors there, having an on site private practice was no longer deemed advantageous by Country Health, so the Medical Group had to to seek alternative premises in April 2005.
This move has precipitated many changes within the practice with the employment of a business development manager and an expansion of Enhanced Primary Care and the utilization of more nurses in patient management.
In 2005 a site at 111 Augustus St was leased and refurbished as temporary accommodation and four doctors from the group moved in. This practice had been quickly outgrown, and with Dr Aubrey Francis joining the practice, a second site at 32 Holland St was leased. Since 2006 more doctors, nurses and staff have joined the medical group, and plans were made to build a bigger multi purpose primary health centre.
In October 2008 the Geraldton Medical Group entered the prestigious BRW fast 100 list at no. 98! The BRW Fast 100 looks at the fastest-growing Australian companies.
Land was purchased for the construction of a new health centre at 233 Lester Avenue. On 27th October 2008 the Geraldton Medical Group relocated to the new state of the art building. The health service was named ‘Panaceum’, derived from ‘Panacea’: In Greek mythology, Panacea was the goddess of healing. She symbolises the power of treatment of all diseases.
The Panaceum Group has been successfully providing clients with access to a wide range of health services, enabling better coordination of care for clients. It’s about looking after the whole patient, not just parts. By 2011 the health centre was already operating at its maximum capacity. When the owner of another group practice in town decided to sell up and leave town, the Panaceum Group took over the practice located in the beautiful former Victoria District Hospital building. The University Medical Practice is part of the Panaceum Group since July 2011.
In 2011 Panaceum was a finalist in the Large Business Excellence Awards of the Mid West Chamber of Commerce. We made the BRW fast 100: 98th fastest growing business in Australia in 2008. Our Travel Clinic Vaccination Service has been awarded Best New Clinic 2010 by Travel Clinics Australia. The Geraldton Medical Group was WAGPET Training Practice of the Year finalist in 2009. Also in 2009, the Panaceum facility received the ‘Excellence in Universal Access Award’. Panaceum building has received other awards like the Commercial/Industrial Building Award.
